9371. I WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPIER WITH A BROKEN STAFF

I WOULD HAVE BEEN
HAPPIER WITH A
BROKEN STAFF
Do you know how these things happen? I am
walking up the stairway to 87 Greenwich.
Not a light is on in the hall. There is a man
with a bicycle, just outside, either leaving
or coming  -  locking or not  -  I cannot
tell. Forty years ago, I would have felt
entombed and in danger. Now I can
laugh it off  -  the crummy guy from
the Chinese restaurant, the locksmith
who never shows up. Outside, along
the curb, the bread truck from
Hudson Bakery arrives.
