PAST IS PROLOGUE
You don't want to wax nostalgic, but there
are things in the past that shouldn't be forgot.
The high-heeled splendor of bright white
collar and the way those rolled those old
style pants : hob-nailed boots let loose on
an ancient Soho sidewalk. Before there was
money. Before there was fame. Before any
of this was legal. Baby, you can drive my car.

The cat slept on the deck ledge. When he was
mine, we called him Sledge. I'd always liked
that name and there was this guy named Percy
Sledge who had a big hit song. 'When a man
loves a woman, can't keep his mind on nothin'
else.' In addition, there never was much running
water, and what there was was foul and brown.

To quench a thirst, we all found it was best to
just grin and bear it, drink a beer, or go downstairs
and get one of those silly, overpriced Dove bars
for the cute little blond girl at the cart.
