12,236. MEADOWLARK LEMON AND THE DOGS ARE BARKING

MEADOWLARK LEMON, AND
THE DOGS ARE BARKING
I went by the land of our fathers before.
Graceland it's not  -  the gateway was open
and I watched people pour through the
grand arrival pavilion. Fountains, and a
lake, a watersprout spraying. The talk was
of fields, baseball, and the effect of things
unsaid. Once or twice, I heard someone
coughing, while small kids played on the
grass. Bones, cars, and the lights of a
gas-station along the side of the road.
An intersection of might and malfeasance
where things were sold for the traveler.
Aspirins in a packet. Travel mugs, with
handles or without. My goodness, this
world is a sometimes lovely place.
