THE PARABOLIC ARC
(some kind of loose american century)
In silence, much like truth, a
parabolic arc is the graduated
turn. We speak of words, as
though they were straight,
though they never are. I'm
trying very hard to keep this
powder dry. You know how
these things go. Last Year In
Marienbad can make me
more at home than anything
else. The Chevrolets had lost
their horizontal fins, and the
Cadillacs had dropped the
vertical. Such a curious
new math was all I could
think : parabolic, smooth,
gentle, with ease. Oh where
were those great cathedrals
of Europe right then? It was
1961, and before I knew a
thing, more money than God
began driving its Falcon home.
