COMMANDING AT
THE JUNCTION
I have pearlized the water, so
that it can never go bad. We'll
have an endless supply on our
trek. Desert, mountain, valley
and hill - it will all work out
well, I am sure. This is delicious
stuff you are serving. What did
you say it was - boiled medallions
of mesquite mash? Hmmm, never
heard that before. And I've eaten
at Chipotle too. Do you think I
ought bring a gun? I've one quite
lovely sidearm I keep in the rear
of my Jeep - though I don't know
what good it would ever do me there.
I wonder, is there a dentist to be along
as we move out? Or even a doctor, for
that matter. I was just reading last
night in our rooms, that old novel
Arrowsmith, by Sinclair Lewis;
where Martin Arrowsmith, in staking
out with Leora a medical practice in
North Dakota realizes that - as a
small-time, country Doc - he'd need,
as well, dental supplies in his office.
Never thought of that before, but early
on they used to do both, or be called
on to do either. 'I tell ya', Doc, you
can do my appendix cut later, but
first can we deal with this infernal
tooth? I imagine one pain might
cancel out the other as well.
And that'd be a help.'
