THE HEIGHT OF
TWENTY HANDS
Someone left the juicer on the counter
in the rear - where the cabinet door
opens and closes. In a diner like this,
you can't see what you can't see. Pablo
the second cook hit it with the swinging
door, and down it went. To make a racket.
And to get bent. No big deal, it was but a
short ruckus. 'I take'a your pay,' the
counterman Chico said, smiling, 'but
not today!' A few people laughed.
Pablo cleaned up, unabashed.
