5427. WALT WHITMAN AT BARNEGAT

WALT WHITMAN
AT BARNEGAT
I should have been there, in that same storm, if not
for nothing at all  -  not patrolling, not watching,
nor sailing nor silent. It would have been all I
could do. Patrolling Barnegat with Walt : 'wild,
wild the storm, and the sea high running, steady
the roar of the gale.' And me, between wrecks
and snow and the sea, looking out and watching,
almost alone, but with someone else. Walt Whitman
then, 'the hoarse roar never remitting.'
