NOISESOME LOADING
(union jobs)
Down at Pier 23, Danny Lace examines his
footwear - 'this should be good enough,' he
decides. In the old days, sports shoes on a
working pier wouldn't even be thought of,
but things are different nowadays.
-
The first truck rolls off the bay, as the hoist-crane
grabs a container for the rear - load that truck
and send it off. But first, Danny has to do the
paperwork. Which isn't paperwork really, any
more. His hand-held scanner scans the bar-coded
stickers which are in various locations on ID panels
of containers and truck - match this to match that;
secure the ramp locks, seal the clamps. Danny does
this well-enough, he's a dockside champ. Finished
now, he walks off - those blue and silver running
shoes proud like an eagle on a promontory edge.
