Up and down Fourth Avenue, all those dead
booksellers linger. To them, it is 1906 and
1924. Everything is in place. Paper never
thwarts its binding. They called this Book
Row. The lamplighter district too.

I never came as a local, but I went as a
tenant hundreds of times. Hours spent in
a semi-darkness all my own; half these guys
wouldn't even put the lights on unless someone
actually needed them. Outside, it all said 1966,
but within that, there lurked a timeless era
to be found and again uncovered.
