6598. MIDNIGHT HEADLINES

MIDNIGHT HEADLINES
Anything that happens now will be of legend
forever : we'll hear of it in our sleep, our kids
will learn about it in seventh grade. Even the
most fictitious factors of any story get paraded
about as truth and glory when the schoolmarms
and the education geeks grab hold. Factual
Freedom, which is, in truth, a softer form
of slavery, wins out in the end.
-
Nowadays it's still light at eight p.m. I watch
the old widows parade past the veteran's graveyard,
that proving ground of fabricated mettle  -  the ones
who fought and lived, and then lived on for sixty
more years or so  -  still talking about it all.
-
The only thing ever good that happened from going
to the V.A. was an awareness of the disease in the
mind  -  the one which doesn't let things go, which
hangs ever-on to the tawdry past, which tries to make
legend out of some military class never attained again.
You've heard of 'Glory Days'? Well, there you have it.
