CHINA
I did a dissertation, and it was
titled 'On Dissertations.' Feeling
I'd covered the subject well, I
felt the mark I got did me a true
disservice. B-. I wanted a number,
not a letter grade. My opening line
was 'China is a chain around the
neck of the world, taking everything
down with it.' I should have added,
'soon enough.' but I did not. I asked
why I'd only received a B-, and was
told it was due to the lack of footnotes.
I said, 'You miss the point. This was
comedy, and comedy doesn't have
footnotes. In the same way you don't
'explain' a joke.' Nothing worked.
He was a dense as a brick wall.
