12,370. PRETTY AND OLD

PRETTY AND OLD
The fire station is on the right,
and it's very last legs too. It
barely stands useful now, and
is from 1881. When pride held
first place. But, now, some
hundred and thirty years later,
the doors were too narrow for
trucks, the second-level hayloft,
from when they used to have
horses, now houses dormitory
beds and 12 city firemen on
rotating shifts. The beams are
weak, and the heating is shot.
They've moved out the usable
things, over to the newer station
on Seventh Ave. This was a
fire museum for a while, but
that didn't work out either.
Schoolkids are wild idiots,
and something always broke.
Like burglars who've broken
off from their leash, and the
teachers did nothing but stare.
