A MEAN, SLINKING, SOUL?
'Eternally grateful to the doctors
and nurses who kept me alive in
intensive care. I would not have
come back alive if not for them.
A doctor's outlook - if you prefer,
his 'idealogy' - is humane, but a
doctor's training is in science, and
science does not see nature as
having a soul. My doctor, in my
good fortune, had a soul! He was
capable of compassion. He was
capable of understanding my
situation in the widest sense.
Beyond blood, and blood
pressure, beyond charts. I do
not know what it was he saw
about me, but he'd gotten right,
and correctly diagnosed the pain.'
