12,344. NEW FEARS IN THE ELECTRIC SUBURB

NEW FEARS IN THE
ELECTRIC SUBURB
The gravestones are growing, it seems,
right to the edge now in St. Gertrude's
Cemetery. Why St. Gertrude, and where'd
they get that name? And why? She wasn't
even really a 'saint.' Never formally, and
her mystical writings have 'mysteriously
disappeared since her death in 1304.
It's odd that for her the clamor-bell
would still ring in a cemetery for the
contemporary dead : those lying here
in memory of their Buicks and Edsels
and Crown Vics and Impalas too. Did
Gertrude have an inkling of what this
world would do, some 700 years later?
-
They've paved now, so people stopped
parking on the grass. That an improvement
I could do without, and Gertrude too,
without a doubt, would understand. Why
value the dead if you don't value their land?
