MANNERISM
It was like that at nine o'clock -
the pointillists were out - rive gauche
and Georges Seurat. Having to do, perhaps,
with the French Navy, my impression of
the Impressionists was that they should be
impressed. I went looking for bathing suit
beauties and industrial chimneys. I bought
a flower from the flower girl - she said her
name was Marna, and that it rhymed with
Hedgewick. I said I didn't understand.
And then she said, 'Language is always a
barrier,' putting a red rose behind her ear.
