NOT SO HIGH
AND MIGHTY
(stories of the secondary Gods)
How they scalped the sky, I was watching.
First there was a momentary scream, cut
short, so to speak, by a motion. I was there,
without discussion. It was all as if a film was
being played in some slow time for the Gods
to watch. 'Let us make them in our image' -
somesuch flaccid quote or two. I turned around
once and bowed (yes, even then, ritual behavior
was required. Insecurity demands it to reinforce
a proclaimed superiority) and then 'If that is so,
you goons, then why should you not let them
live forever?' A rumbling took form in Magasaker's
vast stomach; the voice simply said : 'And I shall
puke forth the things we shall call, 'Earth.''
