ARTIFICE AND PLACE
Having jammed the window up, I could not
get it down. Of course, yes, a friend laughed at
that, saying 'better than not being able to get it
up!'. Gallows humor of the rest-home sort.
All around us, the shorebirds made their
popcorn noises, and the slow surf steadily
pounded - its language soft yet not, and
all beyond my comprehension. I took the
old rag and walked away. At least that
window was clean. Peering out, what was
that I saw? Some silly man walking along,
metal detector in hand, and a pleasure
boat near the coastal wall - coincidently
named 'Up and Ready!' - OK then, I
laughed and went along my way.
