ANOTHER ALLOTMENT
Animated bones, and the way the body
carries on; these are the subject matter
of philosophies of all the ages. My choice
is to select the diffident challenge and
evolve from there. Creole creatures at
the roundabout, with a saucepan and
a lid. Let's go to the university library,
why don't we, to see the useless world
therein : I can list the puzzle : a thousand
solid words a minute on everything you
wouldn't need to know. How those graduates
from long ago each had to write something
on something. We get a slim book then,
on Fitzgerald's use of the shirt metaphor
for broken spirits and bodies, or the uses
of doubt in the work of Thomas Wolfe.
I like this one especially : 'War and the
Erotic.' These are splendid games we play.
