Doing stuff like that. You can't build a bridge
out of toothpicks, and you can't make a home
out of hate. These are just compromises too
many. Take the highway instead - up to
Newark. Where Zanzibar used to be. All
along Lafayette and Mulberry, that was all
Chinese in the 20's. Thousands of immigrant
arrivals, they crowded the streets : gambling
parlors, dens, restaurants and laundries, and
the social clubs. It's all gone now, and they're
all dead. in the place of what once was, nothing
but a concert arena and a hockey stadium. You
can erase the past, yeah, I guess, but it always
shows through if you know where to look.
Just don't kill yourself trying.
