Checkerboard Square black squalor

like Reading Pennsylvania five for a

dollar  -  as cheap as can be. All

the poor people, poorer than me,

are walking Reading's downtown

streets. Horrid. Everywhere is a

medical building or a government

plant. The only industries growing

here seem illness and danger and

illness and want. It's a very sad place,

all that : some Duryea motorcar

madness once owned all the hill

above town, where now an audacious

pagoda, where the quarry once was,

lords high over nothing but Cemetery Hill.
