'THE SLAVES'
I too lived in 'The Slaves', as my
servant district was called. Indentured
laborers building one crazy city : One of
roads and foundations, storehouses and
wharves. I lived where they put me, then
and only then, kept as living squall. You
may have seen me cutting rock or hauling
water, slicing the ground for a road or a
canal. I lived as I died, a few times over.
My pay was the end of my life.
