7194. GREAT SHEDDING SKIN

GREAT SHEDDING SKIN
Once we marvelled at the Marvelettes, if
anyone remembers that : Brylcreem and
Hamilton Watches too. Now it's nothing
but short of open, and you can't just live
in the past. Today, tomorrow, and yesterday,
they somehow jumble all together.
-
I have no more allegiances; I threw them all
away. The chain-link fence 'round those tennis
courts at the distant park where I used to play,
it's all rusted and shuttered now. The concrete
has heaved, as has the tar, and no one ever looks.
I buried my old mind beneath the center net.
