6485. LIKE GRANT TOOK RICHMOND

LIKE GRANT
TOOK RICHMOND
And never brought it back  -  they're still waiting
for him at the crossing  -  horses and mules and all
those limping men, those soldiers with one arm left  -
not necessarily one left arm, of course  -  the wagons
of coal and supplies and timber and medical packets,
the fire-marshall with just one eye left, the rags around
the stragglers heads, and the old wailing plantation
Mamas left wailing and yet. And yet. Better days
were coming, and everyone knew it. I'd bet. I'd bet.
(The South shall rise again)
