6890. THIS WAS THE BALLROOM

THIS WAS THE BALLROOM
Far too far, back in the time of other days,
when people still talked, and big bands played,
I want to say maybe this was the place you might
have been. Had you been at all. There was a
smothering light on the lantern shed, and all
around that people would gather  -  especially
on free nights, when no air-raid siren had
sounded and the lights could stay on. This
whole field sometimes was dance : three
hundred people, I'd bet, swirling and
twirling in glee. Nighttime never
mattered, except for the better
things around.
