TREMENDOUS POWER AT
THE LAST MOMENT
The submarines came up on land
right here; like Amphicars of old,
but in reverse, as they spread out
wheels to crawl the soil. I was unseen,
up on the bluff behind a large tree.
All I could think of, watching, was
how fish, we were told, had slimed
themselves up from the waters as
they evolved with legs, and then,
crawling along the surface, called
it their own and went mammal.
Well, something like that; but this
was different - wartime stories
had told of the German watercraft,
slinging along the old east coast.
It was 1943, nothing was much
going right, and anything could
have happened. Most people
watched the skies for enemy
action. Only I had thought
of the sea!
