12,569. REGIMENTAL HONESTY

REGIMENTAL HONESTY
The rubbernecking geese are
staying at the side of the road
while noisy trucks and buses
rumble by them. Wide-eyed
and super-alert, these geese
look ready for battle. My
feathered friends, don't fight
with steel and glass and
rubber and iron. You'll
not win the moment.

Over at West Point, the
gate-guard makes me step
out of the car. I can tell he
doesn't like my looks, as
he asks for my license and
registration and then says I
should open the trunk. What
cares I? It's a bomb, wired
enough for two or twenty-two,
to go down. Does he sense
something wrong?
