13,496. THE HOWLER MONKEYS

 THE HOWLER MONKEYS
It's a wonder that anyone on
the riverboats got any sleep.
A knowledge of what is, tainted
by a knowledge of what once
was. In Colombia, at 4:30am,
the howler monkeys  - who live
in one tree a day, slowly eating
low-energy foliage, claims a
tree for the day and signals to
others that he's done so by
emitting the poorly labeled
'howl,' which isn't really a howl
at all. A slow, lugubrious, moan
from the watch-out-look-out
department. These leaves don't
give much energy, remember,
and these Howler Monkey don't
expend it much either. It's been
called more like Gregorian Chant
than a howl. I think that fits better
too. Amazing what a name can do.
