ONE TRAITOROUS INFRACTION
What cost me all was something to
remember : Sergeant Ellis had the
means. I wasn't aware he was there.
Watching for nothing in my sense
of being alone, I was immediately
apprehended and sent by the guards
to the guardhouse (of course).
What I had not seen was what they
saw next and I knew then they were
watching: I grabbed the fellow's
pistol, and fired. I don't know what
came next except that I am dead.
'Relieved of duty,' as they would
put it. 'Permanently.'
