RUNNING THE FJORD
OF THE HEART
Charles Lamb, Addison and Steele,
Laurence Sterne - one of those goony
guys, together with a heart where a lamb
should be; speaking with forked tongue,
but with a ladle where the load should be.
There's a mixed-up confusion in Singleton
tonight, and I don't know where to turn.
A tuba concert in the local park, some
Pakistani dancers near the new cricket
field, and a group of new students at
the new tennis courts. How will they
weaather the season, I wonder?

The local town council has forty new
members : each with a face like a stone
and a wrinkle in time. Taking orders,
but no one knows what to do. 'Let's
put up some new houses, that'll look
good.' The Mayor needs the cronies
like the cronies need the Mayor : and
let's hope these twain don't meet.

Over on Avenel Street, they're installing
a new blood store with a waiting room
of gold. Better get there quick, soon
it will all be sold : new products in
short supply. What better way to
make a buck.
