8018. 15 SENDERS AND THE DROP OF A HAT

15 SENDERS AND
THE DROP OF A HAT
'I ain't got the beliefs and I ain't
got the police. I ain't got Injun Jim
and I ain't got Mark Twain. How all
this has happened to me, I'll never
know. The last time I was in Elmira
I drove straight to the hospital to take
a piss. Finally, free access, and no one
asked a thing. Funny, now as I think
back, that's the one thing I can say I
remember most vividly  -  that hospital
lobby, and the way people looked up,
but no moving, no act. Like no one
cared about anything that went on,
simply were there, visiting, or sitting
out another day, or whatever. Even
the fat-guy police guard rent-a-cop
was yawning as I walked right by.
