HAMMERTONE THE HEADFIT
At Sheridan Square something was was
happening : a bookstore, a supermarket,
somehow face to face. Canny Miss
Stepperude lived right here, as did Dave
Van Ronk; as if it was 1958 and never
had changed. I loved those days - before
ATM machines at supermarket doorways
and wind-blown paperbacks still did their
race in the New York windblown alleys.
-
It was weird to find NYC folk in supermarkets;
and it never seemed right, as if they should not
be there at all Buying all the same junk others
bought everywhere else. Exceptionalism does
close down.
