THE TIME
'We pray by not praying,
as we fulfill the law by
transgressing it.' Broken
bottles on the gaslit lawn,
and these Hasids just keep
rolling on. Brooklyn ensnares
and so does Highland Park,
while maybe just maybe it's
Rutgers to decline the honors?

Dayboats on the Raritan, but
the acid water burns the bottom.
No one notices except the bums
who work for the river. A few
bucks an hour picking up
dead turtles.

I resign myself to all of this
even as I'm no longer there
and all I've got left are curses
for where I used to be. All
the pretty girls of Princeton,
they're gone to, or now they're
adolescent dweebs. Buying
sneakers or dock shoes for
next Summer already.
