SOMETIMES IN THINKING
They've said the name of this town is
'Steadfast,' and apparently that is so.
Or or least the maps agree. There's
very little else to go by. Some meander
of an old Route 6, back from when it
was still called 'Grand Army Of the
Republic Highway.'
-
No one uses that appellation now but
back in the 1970's that's how all the
signs read; people seemed to care more
about what they said. Now, I'm pretty
sure 'X-Box Highway' would suffice.
There was, back then, still a touch of
pride around, and this was Union land,
and the Civil War be damned.
-
One has to be strong in thinking like
that. Steadfast too, I suppose. You can't
go swimming in Wishy-Washy Lake
and think a vacation is yours for the
take. It's 'blood sweat, and tears,' as
Churchill put it, toil, grime, and sorrow
too. Holding on to something grand
is always hard to do.
