9653. THE CHILLY CHILD IS A SLIPSTREAM

THE CHILLY CHILD
IS A SLIPSTREAM
And I don't begrudge a man his plantings  -
taking a chance on nothing is as much as
nothing itself. The mannered oasis : yes :
now let us look. Here is the large boat on
Lake Seneca, floating. It is called, 'Miss Seneca.'
Why would that be? An Indian name, for sure,
all those nearby natives in the high lakeside
woods. They would welcome this addition,
as the hunters recede from the hillside dragging
their 10 dead deer? Would they even understand
that white-man-effort at such grouping? Insincere
the Gods, insincere the worship too. And I am
drinking wine from Adelaide, South Australia,
while right here in the Finger Lakes vineyards
abound. Should not I then be drinking that?
Local Gods, local worship, and local grapes as
well. I can never tell, the rambunctiousness of
all this living stresses me. Here, on the roadway
tonight, a huge tree has fallen across the road,
taking down wires and shutting off lights.
