SHOT LIKE A CANNON
Of course, it is, the cannon never gets
'shot', it's the projectile within it that
does the 'shooting' : arc-high ballistic,
deadly fall. It'll take you out, bones
and all. Those battle guys in the trees
and woods, they'll tell you. Looming
fashion of one-armed garments and
legless pants. 'You goes to war, you
takes your chance. When that noise
comes ripping through the trees, I
stop to think a second what a bird
must think. But I never know. There's
a blast or a concussion somewhere
near, and I have to duck again.
They'll tell you about a hundred
things, but I can surely tell you
about luck : you never hear
it coming, but you can tell
when it's gone.'
