8142. PUTTING THIS LONGBOAT TO SEA

PUTTING THIS
LONGBOAT TO SEA
We may rationalize and we may label,
but that goes only so far. There is the
abridgement of time that goes with
our genes, as we telescope our world
into fittable theory. It's backwards,
but it all works.
-
Here, here, I don't want to glamorize
what isn't so. Dreary times abound, that
leitmotif of mothers and sons, doctors
and daughters, hikers, and taxicab men.
-
I can see the truck driver loading his
own freight on the morning after a drunk.
With a pounding head, he mutters, 'never
again, never again.' He's wearing a watch;
'yes', he says, 'yes I am, though I now
forget why.'
