The rope was wide, the rope was narrow,

horse ran forward, I stayed in place.

reminiscent of I think Ambrose Bierce or was it Hart Crane?
That I don't know. I'll have to check. I'm familiar with Hart Crane very well, but can't see that connection, so I'll check Bierce.

It was that story of a guy being hanged and at the end he was already dead but continued to comment on the story. It could not have been Hawthorne?
