14,080. THE POWER WENT OUT

THE POWER WENT OUT
(and no one noticed a thing)
On the tenth day of something, there
wasn't much left  -  the blue-eyed
lady whom I knew as 'Caroline' was
standing alongside the fish-monger's
stand. It was brisk outdoors, but not
chilly. People passed by, mostly not
looking. I figured that unless one was
interested in shopping fish there was
not any real reason to look or linger.
-
Chinatown used to drive me crazy;
the fish already mentioned, and the
crazy-voiced locals with their soups
and their beancakes and fish. I should
add - gaping-mouth, dead fish, and ducks
hung strangled by their necks and once
roasted bare and brown already.
-
People sat and browsed their plates
with their restaurant chopsticks. The
Chinese, who lived there, power-piled
the rice into their own gaping maws,
all the while, talking a mile a minute.
A strangely intense culture, they are.
-
How quickly it all melts away  -  just
across Canal Street, cheap diamonds
and gold took center-stage instead of
all that fish and food. One had certainly
to change one's mood!
