FALLSBURG
Why do they do this? It's
all a settled matter of the
borders and the river, yet
words are exchanged and
hearings are held. All those
foolish people entering their
opinions and wants, interests
and concerns: The funny man
in his gabardine suit; the local
hardware guy asking about
the commercial value of the
land if someone other than
the corporation was buying
it. The farm lady who wants
to know how many trees and
shrubberies would be getting
cut down. One after the other
so much is said and irrelevant
concerns displaced by civic
platitudes and false conclusions.
It's an old town; the bridges and
the river unchanged.
-
None of that matters now, as
the world itself, around this
world, is here as unrecognizable
as some Venusian atmosphere
would be to you or me. Like
the decades of consolidation,
everything is now combined
into self and moment and loss
or gain. No longer do balance
or survival count.
