SHOW NO EMOTION,
MAKE NO MOVEMENT
Potato pickers in Maine, who come
down to Aroostook? Lines of Canucks
with French faces. How marvelous
can any of that be? I love that scenery.
They seem to make small campsites
along the lakeside beds, where they
talk away the hours - children and
mothers, men and boys. What's said
gets said, and then to bed. Another
day's picking looms.
-
The landscape gets dotted as well,
with lumber trucks and cut-through
roads that bring this to that, and vice
versa too. It's been told to me that one
should never ask a Maine native for
directions to anywhere - for they take
a fond delight in mis-directing outsiders
and laughing off the result as great fun.
'Show no emotion, make no movement,
and then be done...'
