BROAD METAL PIPES
These stupid kids in Newark Station, they
ran through the waiting room door - brandishing
pipes and cutting knives, they took down anyone
in their way. I watched from the second level all
the carnage - I got sick to my scheduled stomach.
It was over in thirty seconds, and no one did a thing.
Bloodied people on the floor, coats and packages
strewn about. One or two cast-off wallets, emptied,
heaved. Noise and screaming fluttered on.
And then a few cops came : dumb sorts, actually had
to ask 'what's happened?' Led Zepplin, as I recall, years
back had an album entitled 'In Through the Out Door.'
I thought of that as I watched these thugs, and then
I watched these policemen leaving.
