3339. LEXICON OF DEMOLAY

LEXICON OF DEMOLAY
Fifteen thousand immigrants passed through here,
seeking a solace in their Southern European
overlapping dreams  -  of Jesus and his whitewash,
of Ephesus, St. Paul, that Virgin Mary, and all the
rest of the old Thanksgiving Parade. Steampipes
yet coughing with tubercular blood, faint ladies
passing their fluids over sewer and drain. A few
clerks and guards with keys would scan the
passing jumble and note the needs : nothing
like a steadfast world existed. All nerves
and fear; a perfect place for God to appear.
