PRAYERS IN THE
CHARNEL HOUSE
'And this here is the ossuary, where we
keep the bones.' The skulls were piled
high in pyramid style, and some candles
flickered in the corners. 'Now in this
modern world, outside the past, there
is none of this left at all. If you go to
look up, in your contraptual new way,
spell-checks and all of that, neither the
word 'charnel', nor 'ossuary' will come
up. Chanel and Channel, yes, but no
one names a restaurant Charnel. And
the same with ossuary - you'll get
'usury' instead. A useful title there.'
I wished to say 'but no one names
a restaurant 'Usury' either.' But I
did not. Too distant this horizon
seemed before the one I stood
upon; sandy shore and all.
