955. JUST NOTHING THEY COULD DO

JUST NOTHING
THEY COULD DO
(a true story, related)
In republican centers you can never
find these two - the big one with the
yarmulke bragging about Israel, and
the little one with the torn boating shirt,
looking up, saying 'I don't know why
everyone's so down on them for raiding
that ship. I rather admire them for it.' Ah,
so the joyous homeland of the satisfied and
the sated! Yet, then, just as quickly, the
conversation changed, to someone's health,
or lack of it - death, in fact - always a
concern for these two when near the
register. 'His liver gave out. It just
gave out. I understand, at the end,
there was just nothing they
could do.'
