13,425. WHERE THEY ALL LIVED ONCE

WHERE THEY ALL LIVED ONCE
Squeegee guys and long lost airmen,
those veterans of streets and squalor;
all memories now. Diner meatloaf and
plates of fries, all memories too. All
have been taken and turned away, hauled
by society's mess like a candle-flame
on a dining-room table. The room we
all once lived in is now vacant.
-
Men play games, but they're all brand
new : the screwhead on the table, it
resembles a skull seen once on a
matchbook cover announcing some
western bar. The name on the waitresses'
chest reads 'Sadie,' but I daren't call
her that.
-
Sitting two places over, the guy who
invented dial-up is now a gaunt old
man  -  with little to do, and
no place to stand.
