14,241. HARDLY A NEW IDEA

HARDLY A NEW IDEA
Painting colors on newly-stretched
canvas is certainly not a new idea. In
fact, it's quite old  -  Old Masters and
those crazy painters from the past
were always onto that.
-
Down at the Cedar Tavern, in about
1949, those guys thought about
changing all that : wood, metal,
masonite. After the 1930's, that
other idea of monumental murals
was faded away.
-
By 1955, who needed Diego Rivera
when you could have a Buick Riviera?
Some in 'private practice' scoffed, but
those who had the fever plied ahead
and raged. Rothko to deKooning;
Pollack to Resnick to Kline.
