ONCE MAYBE THE
NIGHT CRAWLER
Once maybe the night crawler climbed
from the gloom - where we'd last heard
the wind and the rain was a fury. I was
short of everything then and just had to
walk away. Nothing was held for me to
cash in, and those furies I'd banked on
had left me behind. In the near distance,
a township crane had been left; parked
near a quiet corner; they'd left it, like
some pre-historic dinosaur waiting to
give its timely report on extinction.
