CAMP KILMER
(Hungarian Uprising, 1957)
In holding the kinship aloft,
it's a banner across a well-cut
field; all these people, newly arrived.
Hungarians, up in arms, displaced
and gone. And the Salvation Army
peril? - so many things to know or
not to know. How do I sleep in this
unsound land? Where do I lay my head?
What will I do, and where will I go?
I heard someone ask such delicate
questions, carefully and quietly,
and alone.
