3124. MADE TO STAY

MADE TO STAY
(henry street settlement, nyc, 1970)
These things are made for fondling;
the entire patchwork quilt of it all.
Listen decidedly hard, transient one:
the night is made for crying, the milk is
made for spilling. Outside the Ken-Ken
Dairy Bar, where three old Jews are
still smarting from their memories,
a new form of consumption takes
over their eyes. 'We shall have this
land, now as it is, or we shall have
nothing.' The other person - her
name was Mara Kein - barely sat
down on the steps to weep before
the others walked away; not a
dry eye in the house after that.
