(Gravesend, Brooklyn, 1978)
'When I was alive,
I was dead. Now that
I am dead, I have never
been more alive.'
-
At Gravesend, where the river markers
mark nothing but dirt, the old Citadel
church still welcomes whatever vagrant it
can hold. A can of cold soup and a few
prayers, whittled like a talisman over
unsuspecting heads. So little, going
for so much - while so much
goes for so little.
I was dead. Now that
I am dead, I have never
been more alive.'
